 THE THIRD   DAY

As always we start with:

Luk 24:44  And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

Luk 24:45  Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures, (KJV)

Why was it at this particular point, then,  that Yeshua chose to open their understanding???

Lets get a grip on this event.

Who was it that got their understanding opened??

What was it they did not understand???

Reading from the HCSB

Luk 24:4  While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes.

Luk 24:5  So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground. "Why are you looking for the living among the dead?" asked the men.

Luk 24:6  "He is not here, but He has been resurrected! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee,

Luk 24:7  saying, 'The Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day'?"

Luk 24:8  And they remembered His words.

Luk 24:9  Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest. (who are the rest)

Luk 24:10  Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things.

Luk 24:11  But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women.

G3026  λῆρος  lēros

Thayer Definition: 1) idle talk, nonsense

Idle tales (KJV)

Nonsense (NASB)

Utter nonsense (CJB)

Foolishness (LITV)

(how could it possibly seem like nonsense)

Luk 24:12  Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went home, amazed at what had happened.

Luk 24:13  Now that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

Luk 24:14  Together they were discussing everything that had taken place.

Luk 24:15  And while they were discussing and arguing, Jesus Himself came near and began to walk along with them.

 G4802  συζητέω  sood-zay-teh'-o

From G4862 and G2212; to investigate jointly, that is, discuss, controvert, cavil: - dispute (with), enquire, question (with), reason (together).

Luk 24:16  But they were prevented from recognizing Him.

(Who or what was preventing them)

(maybe it was Sihon king of the Amorites!!!)

Luk 24:17  Then He asked them, "What is this dispute that you're having with each other as you are walking?" And they stopped walking and looked discouraged.

Luk 24:18  The one named Cleopas answered Him, "Are You the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn't know the things that happened there in these days?"

Luk 24:19  "What things?" He asked them. So they said to Him, "The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a Prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people,

Luk 24:20  and how our chief priests and leaders handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified Him.

Luk 24:21  But we were hoping that He was the One who was about to redeem Israel. Besides all this, it's the third day since these things happened.

Who was it that got their understanding opened??

What was it they did not understand??

Remember our main question?

Why was it at this particular point that Yeshua chose to open their understanding???

Lets look closely at vs.19

Luk 24:19  "What things?" He asked them. So they said to Him, "The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a Prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people, (HCSB)

Luk 24:19  And2532 he said2036 unto them,846 What things?4169 And1161 they3588 said2036 unto him,846 Concerning4012 Jesus2424 of Nazareth,3480 which3739 was1096 a(435) prophet4396 mighty1415 in1722 deed2041 and2532 word3056 before1726 God2316 and2532 all3956 the3588 people:2992 (KJV)

Now checking a very literal translation

Luk 24:19  And He said to them, What things? And they said to Him, The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a man, a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people; (LITV)

Luk 24:21  But we were hoping that He was the One who was about to redeem Israel. Besides all this, it's the third day since these things happened.

(Were they looking just for national salvation)

(Was there no need to take a deep inward look?)

 So far:

A.       Its nonsensical that He could have arose

B.       He was just a man

C.      He did not fulfil their expectation of national salvation (restoration)

What has driven them into this serious unbelief?

 What did they not understand???

They did not understand that they did not believe HIM!!!

(it is critical that we see, realize, understand, get a grip on, the fact that we do not believe before we can see WHY we don’t believe)

Reality has not yet set in for the disciples yet, however it is about to.

(is there anyone else we know who did not believe Him at a critical juncture? Maybe Moses?)

Lets get a grip on just how blinding unbelief can be!!

Continuing on……(in the HCSB)

Luk 24:15  And while they were discussing and arguing, Jesus Himself came near and began to walk along with them. (HCSB)

Luk 24:17  Then He asked them, "What is this dispute that you're having with each other as you are walking?"…….

Luk 24:19  "What things?" He asked them…

Luk 24:25  He said to them, "How unwise and slow you are to believe in your hearts all that the prophets have spoken!

Luk 24:26  Didn't the Messiah have to suffer these things and enter into His glory?"

Luk 24:27  Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He interpreted for them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.

Exo 17:7…. Is the LORD among us, or not?

(How blinding can unbelief get????)

Heb 3:12  Watch out, brothers, so that there won't be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that departs from the living God.

Heb 3:13  But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin's deception  (HCSB)

In other words DON’T LET IT HAPPEN!!!

(since unbelief causes us to depart from Him, it must be critical for us to understand WHY unbelief sets in, in our lives)

continuing on…….

Luk 24:29  But they urged Him: "Stay with us, because it's almost evening, and now the day is almost over." So He went in to stay with them.

  Still blinded by unbelief!!!!

Luk 24:31  Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him but He disappeared from their sight.

(what a wonderful time for Him to have taught a lesson from torah on unbelief, but He disappears)

What could possibly be going on here???

What is the signifigance of His disappearing?

(what is He waiting on?)

Luk 24:33  That very hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven and those with them gathered together,

Luk 24:34  who said, "The Lord has certainly been raised, and has appeared to Simon!"

Luk 24:35  Then they began to describe what had happened on the road and how He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

(what had happened on the road)

They were brought face to face with their unbelief!!

Lets see how he continues to bring the rest of them face to face with their unbelief!!!!

Luk 24:36 They were still talking about it when -- there he was, standing among them!

Luk 24:37 Startled and terrified, they thought they were seeing a ghost.

Luk 24:38 But he said to them, "Why are you so upset? Why are these doubts welling up inside you?  (CJB)

WHY INDEED!!!!

The reason He suddenly disappeared and suddenly appeared was to help them see why they were not believing

It is after they start seeing in themselves WHY they don’t believe that they get their understanding opened!!!!!!

Luk 24:11  But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women.

What brought them to this conclusion??

 A. Too much unleavened bread

 B. Too much wine in the cups of Passover

 C. Human reasoning  (Sihon king of Amorites)

Luk 24:19  And He said to them, What things? And they said to Him, The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a man, a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people; (LITV)

What brought them to this conclusion??

 A. Too much unleavened bread

 B. Too much wine in the cups of Passover

 C. Human reasoning  (Sihon king of Amorites)

Luk 24:21  But we were hoping that He was the One who was about to redeem Israel. Besides all this, it's the third day since these things happened.

What brought them to this conclusion??

 A. Too much unleavened bread

 B. Too much wine in the cups of Passover

 C. Human reasoning  (Sihon king of Amorites)

WHERE does human reasoning come from??

 Enter the KEY OF DAVID

Isa 22:22  And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open. (speaking of Eliakim)

Rev 3:7  And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

Revisiting the feast of Tabernacles

1Jo 2:15  Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

1Jo 2:16  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

1Jo 2:17  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.

and the pride of life= Human reasoning which leads to unbelief.

 Cain's unbelief

Gen 4:6  Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you furious? And why are you downcast?

Gen 4:7  If you do right, won't you be accepted? But if you do not do right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must master it."

Gen 4:8  Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

As Cain is killing Abel who is he believing, YHWH God or himself???

and the pride of life= unbelief in Cain, he cant see WHY his offering isnt as good as his brothers.

In Noahs day what caused the unbelief of a world that perished???

and the pride of life= Its not going to rain, its never rained before, if it had rained before wouldn’t we know about it??

Moses’ unbelief….

Num 20:10  And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?

Num 20:12  And the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not

and the pride of life= Moses, because of his great and awsome understanding of who

YHWH God is, just couldn’t understand that these people could ever get it right.

We see a repeat of this attitude that was in Moses in Elijah’s life!!

1Ki 19:14  And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away…….

1Ki 19:18  Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

David’s unbelief……

When David was commiting adultery with Urriah’s wife, and when he, David, was giving the instructions to end Urriahs’ life, who was he believing???  Certainly not YHWH God!!

Does this occur before or after David is allowed to build the tabernacle for the ARK??

the lust of the flesh= a series of acts of unbelief that led to adultery and then to conspiracy and murder !!!!

 Davids unbelief again…..

Ch 21:1  And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel……

1Ch 21:7  And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel……

1Ch 21:14  So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.

and the pride of life=David very foolishly thinking Israels great army was a result of himself.

But wait, I thought David possessed this KEY, this object, that somehow delivered him!!!!

What was the KEY of David????

His heart
